Filippo Maggiore

Filippo Maggiore was born in Bagheria, the Sicilian town that also gave birth to Renato Guttuso, Giuseppe Tornatore, Ignazio Buttitta, and Dacia Maraini. From an early age, he showed a deep sensitivity to nature and material, which later became central to his artistic practice. After graduating from the State Institute of Art in Palermo, he began his career in the traditional art of Sicilian cart painting, training in the workshops of the Ducato family and Master Emilio Murdolo, who had also taught Guttuso.
Leaving decorative painting behind, Maggiore developed a distinctive language rooted in the observation of reality and the exploration of diverse techniques—oil, acrylic, watercolor, tempera, and pastel—seeking a constant balance between form and emotion. Active in restoration and large-scale fresco commissions for churches and historic villas, in 1968 he founded Il Tocco, the first art gallery in Bagheria, which played a key role in the cultural renewal of the area.
Featured in national and international art publications and collections, Filippo Maggiore is regarded as a significant figure in contemporary Sicilian painting, bridging tradition and modernity through a poetic and evocative visual language.
