Sandro Chia

Sandro Chia (Florence, 1946) is an internationally renowned Italian painter and sculptor, a central figure in the Italian Transavanguardia (Neo-Expressionism) movement, which emerged in the late 1970s and 1980s. After training at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence, where he graduated in 1969, and an initial period of conceptual experimentation, Chia converted to a powerful, Neo-Expressionist figuration. Along with artists such as Francesco Clemente, Mimmo Paladino, Nicola De Maria, and Enzo Cucchi, he participated in the rehabilitation of painting and artistic manual skill, contrasting the dominant conceptual trends. His works are characterized by monumental, sensual, and exuberant human figures, often charged with irony and inspired by themes and techniques from art history, reinterpreted with a visionary and passionate style. He has exhibited globally, including the Venice Biennale, Documenta in Kassel, and prestigious institutions like the MoMA in New York.
